Maidu Creation Legend

Maidu Creation Legend
This California tribe of Indians have several Creation myths. One tells how Talvolte and Peheipe, the survivors from the Deluge, were found floating in a canoe by the Creator who, together with Coyote, is living in an earthly paradise. The Creator produces the first men while Coyote plays the part of the tempter and the spirit of evil.
Another version, which seems to be earlier, tells how Kodoyanpe and Coyote were the only survivors from the Deluge. After having created mankind from wooden images they quarrelled and Kodoyanpe was forced to fleet to the east. Kuksu, the first man who appears in the former legend, is known to the Pomo Indians as a creator god.
